What is the material used for piston?
A piston subject to high temperatures and high pressures during its reciprocation in a cylinder of an internal combustion engine is required to have a high strength and a high resistance against wear and to be lightweight. As a material for such a piston, an Al (aluminium) alloy containing Si (silicon) is widely used.
A piston aids in the transformation of heat energy into mechanical work and vice versa. Because of this, pistons are a key component of heat engines. Pistons work by transferring the force output of an expanding gas in the cylinder to a crankshaft, which provides rotational momentum to a flywheel.
How does a piston go up and down?
Combustion cycle: Pistons are always moving up and down, as a piston moves upward, it compresses the air and fuel in the combustion chamber. Once this happens, the spark plug is used to ignite the fuel and air, and the resulting explosion pushes the piston back down.
