What is a Membrane Switch?

A membrane switch is an electrical control for turning a circuit on and off. Membrane switches are more cost-effective and take up less design space than mechanical switches or buttons because of their low profile. Membrane switches are easy to clean which makes them ideal for Medical or industrial controls.

You may have held a dozen membrane switches and not even known it. A slim-profile plastic remote controller, keypad, or touchpad with buttons consisting of raised impressions in a sealed outer layer is almost certainly a membrane switch. They are convenient, inexpensive, and highly portable.

This is possible because a membrane switch (also known as a touch switch or membrane keypad) is constructed from flexible layers or “membranes” – thin like plastic wrap but made of polyester – sandwiched together like stacked sheets of paper. These layers can interact with each other when stimulated from the top down.
