Cuando el grupo The Beat se separó en 1983, dos de los fundadores del grupo, Andy Cox y David Steele, continuaron juntos como Fine Young Cannibals, reclutando a Roland Gift (medio blanco, medio caribeño) como cantante.

Con la probada fórmula de Cox y Steele de mezclar ska, ritmos beats y adornos pop, sumado a la personal forma de cantar de Gift (y a lo bien que daba en la cámara), Fine Young Cannibals obtuvieron el éxito que The Beat nunca disfrutó.

Tomando el nombre de una película de serie de 1960, llamada All the Fine Cannibals, el trio sacó su primer disco en 1985 y frecuentó la MTV con el single “Johnny Come Home” y una revisión “gamberra” de “Suspicious Minds” de Elvis Presley.

En 1989 lanzaron The Raw and the Cooked (nombre sacado de un libro del antropólogo Claude Levi Strauss – Le cru et le cuit- de 1964) directamente al número #1 en todo el mundo, con éxitos tan pegadizos (y permanentes en la memoria) como “Good Thing” , “She Drives me Crazy” , “I’m not the Man I Used to Be”
y “Don’t Look Back” .

Después de ello, el grupo rápidamente perdió presencia y su cantante intenta retomar su carrera de actor, con un discreto éxito.

En definitiva, Fine Young Cannibals fue uno de tantos grupos ingleses incapaces de sobrevivir a las expectativas que despertaron, aunque al menos nos dejaron un racimo de canciones de gran gancho y perfectas en su mezcla de pop pegadizo.
